This wine is a blend of all six red cultivars on the farm namely – Merlot, Pinotage, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Cinsaut. Grapes are hand selected and whole bunch pressed in a basket press. Ensuring only the best grapes are used in the wine. Three 300L barrels are blended – Merlot/Cab, Pinotage/Cinsaut and Shiraz/Malbec and left to mature individually for 12 months. Each barrel is blended to emphasize the best of what the year has to offer. Fun fact: This wine is made to emulate the 1974 Goede Hoop Vintage Rouge which was the first ever blended red to be awarded a superior award. The Goede Hoop Cellar, built in 1935, still uses its original cement tanks and “Kuipe” (Open top cement fermenters) to commercially produce all of their red wines. It has always been important to remain true to their roots, to produce smaller quantities of high-quality wine that celebrate this unique style of wine making.
What can you expect?
Aromas are persistent and suggest rustic dark forest fruits with spice. The mouthfeel is crisp and tannins are ripe. Fruit notes are of crushed blackcurrants. This wine is easy to match with food and reminiscent of top class spicy, black fruited wines from Hermitage in northern Rhône
