36 MONTHS IN OLD FRENCH OAK
The Natte Valleij P.O.W. 2018 is Alexander Milner’s take on Cape Bordeaux. Grapes are taken from the Simonsberg ward, so hollowed for its fine Cabernet Sauvignon based blends. Grapes are picked by hand and allowed to ferment in open top fermenters, with only manual punch downs allowed. Fermentation will last 8-10 days. It is drained directly to barrel and basket pressed. It is aged on its primary lees for 12 months in 225L barrels, after which it is blended and aged for a further 24 months in large foudre, in a type of Barolo fashion. The wine is named after the Italian Prisoners of War (P.O.W.) that lived on Natte Valleij during the Second World War. They assisted greatly with winemaking at the time on the estate. One of them left an inscription on a wall on the farm.
The inscription was made 2 days after Christmas, so one can only imagine his desire to return to his homeland. This was our inspiration in naming this blend as well as the Barolo fashion in which we age these wines. “Made with minimal interference and pretence - preserving the intrinsic link between grape and bottle” Dark red and lively in colour. On the nose scented plums and subtle cacao. On the palette there are those lovely dark fruits, cacao and that all to familiar Simonsberg herbal nuisance. A deft balance of tannin and acidity adds to its surprising length.
