The Fledge & Company O-Velaphi / Elgin Chardonnay 2017
Philosophy – “O-Velaphi” – A conversational isiXhosa phrase to ascertain from whence one comes, where one was borne, your tribe and thus determining your character. O-Velaphi Chardonnay is an ode to the African hands, soils & vintage which created this wine & represent its truly unique origin.
Each vintage features a photograph taken somewhere on our great continent. This maiden vintage originates from a single climate in Elgin along the Applewaite Lake, the Clone CY95 vines wedged into decomposed Table Mountain sandstone over white clay with chunks of sandstone strew amongst the vines.
Elgin’s macro-climate is decidedly cool – with cold winters & mild summers, this climate’s proximity to a lake & exposition in the face of the prevailing oceanic winds makes for an exceptionally cool micro-climate resulting in optimal development of flavour. All fruit was hand-harvested mid-February to maximize natural acidity & best express the citrus fruit profile of the varietal.
A buxom yet restrained and elegant vintage resulted in an age-worthy wine for cellaring. A melange of green ‘n yellow citrus, hay ‘n white blossoms, wet slate, subtle orange, honey, toasted flakes, lime marmalade, crush oystershell & bracing acidity with zippy lemon-salt twang on the finish of this lithe wine.
