This Red Blend 2019 is comprised of Syrah 67% and Pinot Noir 33%. Two grapes beating as one! So what does one do when you have electric cool-climate Syrah & sultry ‘n seductive Elgin Pinot? Well, you blend them together to make the perfect braai side partner or super fancy restaurant companion wine. Prime Pinot Noir vineyards from Elgin planted on sandstone & Bokkeveld shales ‘n ironstone; combine with a now lost Syrah (clone SH99) vine in Elgin on a terraced Bokkeveld shale strewn hillside & old vine in ultra-shale rich soils of the far-flung continental climes of the Tradouw Valley.
Each parcel was vinified separately, with all fruit hand-harvested at dawn & the winemaking extremely traditional. Post ferment the Syrah was taken to 500L barrels, matured for 18 months, before blending with the Pinot Noir into tank for another 6 months, before bottling, unfined & unfiltered. 2019 was a superb vintage allowing the crafting of elegantly structured wines.
What can you expect?
Seamless Ying & Yang marriage of Pinots tart red berry, exotic spice ‘n supple tannins, with Syrah’s darker fruit, savoury & gamey flavours reigned in with subtle oak spice, zippy cool climate acidity & savoury finish begging you to come back for another sip.
This unique cool climate blend pairs exceptionally well with steamed pork dumplings with XO sauce, braised beef short rib boa, traditional beef Wellington, a T-bone on the braai with chimichurri & garden salad, as well as soft fromage & charcuterie or simply sipped on its own.
This fine blend is best decanted a half hour to an hour prior to enjoying in a large, bowled wine glass & served lightly chilled in warmer climes ‘n times.
