Brothers Mark and Bobby Wallace have spent the last four years creating their own wine project together. What originally started as making some braai wines for themselves and friends has turned into a new label, whereby they seek out unique vineyard sites. Their first wine under their Off the Record label is an Elgin Chenin Blanc – a scarce wine due to there being only three Chenin Blanc vineyards in Elgin. Since the 2022 vintage Bobby is flying solo and has included a high-altitude Syrah from the Ceres plateau.

‘Just a tad short of the brilliance of the 2021 release, but this is still an impressive follow-up from Bobby Wallace. Using grapes from the cool Ceres Plateau, it's a correspondingly fresh, focused style of Syrah with lots of zip and focus, clove and pepper notes from 100% whole bunches and notes of potpourri and savoury red berries. 2024-29’ – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2023, 93/100

The wine has an attractive deep red hue. The nose leads with appealing spicy aromas -  white pepper supported by notes of both red and black berries, some violets and a hint of garrigue. Dark fruits follow through onto the palate with an appealing juicy entrance supported by savoury white pepper notes, a touch of salinity and rounded off with fine subtle tannins.  A wonderful example of high altitude Syrah.  A wine, whilst still youthful, displays the finesse we expect from cool climate, high altitude wines yet shows enormous maturation potential should you be patient enough to cellar the wine.
